Craigslist Dresser

I was looking to purchase a dresser to fit all my extra junk in that has accumulated in my room. No one I knew was willing to sell one to me, so I went to craigslist. For several days I searched for one that was a decent price and not too far away. I finally found one for $33.00 at Minerva Park, Ohio (a suburb of Columbus). This is what the dresser looked like:

Dresser from Craigslist that was "shabby chic'ed"

Not too bad looking. It was in excellent shape, made of solid wood (which was very important to me). HOWEVER....... NOT in love with the color..what-so-ever! This dresser chest was in desperate need of a face lift: and I knew just what to do! Since I just bought a new comforter set from Kohl's that had lime green and teal in it, I needed to paint this thing to match it.

It was almost as if fate had brought me to Kohl's that day. I wasn't even looking to buy a new comforter and this had the "new" color I wished my bedroom would be, as well as the lime green that my room already is! FATE!!!!! Plus at 60% off, it was a no brainer....

I purchased the dresser on last Monday 6/4/12. I immediately went to a couple of different home supply stores (I try to buy from local places first, then corporate places last). I went to Sherwin Williams to buy the paint. I originally was going to spray paint it all a flat black color and accent it with bright colors, but it was too windy that day, and I needed to get something started ASAP (I was still in school last week: we had finals and I didn't want to spend all of my one week break fixing up this dresser). So I ended up looking at the teals they had. For those of you that know teal, it can be a green teal or a blue teal. Both of the different kinds of teal were already incorporated in my room already, so I ended up choosing a color called BELIZE.

Luckily for me, Joann Fabrics was right beside Sherwin Williams. I took the paint sample with me and found a beautiful looking fabric with the color in it. "Fabric? What are you doing with fabric?" you might say? Mod Podge it onto the front of the drawers!!!!!! I've never worked with mod podge before so I knew this was going to be interesting. All I will say is that I probably should have found paper to do it for my first time working with mod podge. It was very difficult for me to get it right and I got one crease and a few lumps in the fabric. But oh well, it was my first time working on a large project like this.... Anyway... I also went to Lowes and got some 1/2 inch trim that my neighbor so generously cut for me to the size I needed it to be. After three coats of VALSPAR satin white, it was ready to be attached. Also, while I was at Lowes, I found some knobs to put on the drawers because I wasn't too fond of the ones that were on there when I purchased it. I found some that were just a little over $1.50. I didn't want to spend too much on knobs because I needed eight of them. They came in a brassy color, I don't like brass, so I found VALSPAR satin everglade glen and I also put three coats of spray paint on those as well.

I really liked how things were looking with it so far. I took a little time off on Thursday because that was the day of my final and afterwards some friends and I went over to Reynoldsburg and ate at TGIF (we had to foreign students with us and they had never been there before, so we went!). We didn't get home until after 7pm. So Friday I decide that I didn't want the drawers to be BLAH, so I found some damask wrapping paper at Hobby Lobby for $4.99 and mod podged it to the inside of the drawer. That was about a 4 hour project. It was hot that day. While in the middle of applying the second coat on the drawers, a friend had called and wanted to meet me at the Cheesecake Factory at Easton. Who can say no to cheesecake? NOT THIS FAT KID! **FYI: their new skinnylicious menu has some really good stuff for under 590 calories. I ended up getting the turkey avocado sandwich with a side salad. We ended up splitting a piece of cheesecake (COOKIE DOUGH! YUMM), then we saw Madagascar 3. SUPER FUNNY!!! In the previews I saw that DESPICABLE ME 2 IS COMING SOON!! HOLY CHIPOTLE I'M SO EXCITED TO SEE THAT!!!!! I loveeeeee that movie. And yes... I'm a (soon to be) 28 year-old who still likes to watch cartoon movies.

Today I finished the dresser. I took the entire weekend off to relax, sort of. Saturday my sister took me to a barn that has a lot of cool things, really old things. It is located on Route 207 just south of Atlanta, Ohio. If you are coming from Route 22 (in between Circleville and Washington Court House), it will be on your left. If you are coming up from Chillicothe on Route 207, it will be on your right. I found a lot of porcelain vases and bowls. The bowls I have another project lined up for. Anyway, if you are looking to find some weird old things, I highly recommend this barn.

The finished product:

In this picture you can see a little bit of the damask paper on the inside of the drawers (as well as my bottles of champagne on the floor *saving for a later date TBD* )

Just a close up of the drawers

Sure there are a lot of imperfections in the dresser that I see, but like I mentioned earlier, this was my first big project that I wanted to do. I think it turned out decent enough for me. If you like it, pin it! :)
